T20 World Cup always gives some extraordinary performances to the fans. Every player and every team wants to give their best when it comes to the ICC event. In this article we will discuss the list of batsmen who have won the Golden Bat in the history of the T20 World Cup since its inception.
So far, there have been seven editions, and the upcoming edition will be held in Australia later this year. Interestingly, the former Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, still holds the record of scoring the most number of runs in a single edition of the T20 World Cup.
Golden Bat Winner in T20 World Cup List
1. Mathew Hayden (2007)
The first ever edition of the shorter format was held in South Africa in 2007. And the first ever “Golden Bat” winner was the former Australian swashbuckling opener, Mathew Hayden. The left-hander was the highest run-scorer in the 2007 edition. Hayden scored 265 runs in six matches at an average and strike rate of 88.33 and 144.80, respectively, including four half-centuries.
2. Tillakaratne Dilshan (2009)
Tillakaratne Dilshan was one of the most underrated batsmen in Sri Lanka. He was at his best between 2009 and 2012. That’s what he showed in the 2009 edition. He ended up winning the “Golden Bat” in the 2009 World Cup, which was the main reason Sri Lanka made it to the Finals. Dilshan scored 317 runs in seven matches, at an average and strike rate of 52.43 and 144.74, including three half-centuries.
3. Mahela Jayawardene (2010)
There is another Sri Lanka legend on the list and it is none other than the former skipper, Mahela Jayawardene. The legendary batsman was at his best when it came to the T20 World Cup. He won the “Golden Bat” in the 2010 season. Jayawardene ended the season with 302 runs in six games at an average and strike rate of 60.40 and 159.78, respectively.
4. Shane Watson (2012)
The former Australian all-rounder was at his peak at the start of last decade. He won the “Golden Bat” for the 2012 edition. Watson scored a total of 249 runs in six innings at an average of 49.80 and a strike rate of 150, including three half-centuries. In that tournament, he was at his explosive best with both bat and ball.
5. Virat Kohli (2014)
There are not many batting records that the former Indian skipper doesn’t have. He still holds the record for scoring the most runs in a single edition. It was the 2014 edition in Bangladesh. Virat scored 319 runs in just six innings at an incredible average of 106.33 and a strike rate of 129.15, including four half-centuries. Although India didn’t make it to the finals, and but Virat won the “Golden Bat” award.
6. Tamim Iqbal (2016)
Tamim Iqbal has always performed really well for Bangladesh at the top of the order. That’s what he showed in the 2016 World Cup in India. The left-hander ended the season with the most runs and won the “Golden Bat”. He scored 295 runs in six matches at an average and strike rate of 73.75 and 142.52, including one century and one half-century.
7. Babar Azam (2021)
The Pakistani skipper is arguably the best batsman in the world at the moment. That is what he showed in the last ICC event in the UAE. Babar led his team really well to the semi-finals and ended up winning the “Golden Bat”. He scored 303 runs in six innings at an average of 60.60 and a strike rate of 126.25, including four half-centuries.
