T20 cricket is a game of scoring runs quickly. A team that can score quickly and gets the most runs wins the game. That is why we see batsmen go after the bowling from the very first ball in order to score as many runs as possible. With the next edition of the Caribbean Premier League to start on September 1, a more action-packed season is coming.
The likes of Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Evin Lewis, and many more will compete in the tournament. With so many hard-hitting batsmen, the chance for the bowler to make an error gets impossible. And in this article, we will discuss the list of the fastest 50 in the history of the CPL.
3. Evin Lewis (17 balls) against Jamaica Tallawahs in 2019
The third fastest half-century is registered under the name of Evin Lewis. It was the 7th match of the 2019 season between Jamaica Tallawahs and St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots at Basseterre. Batting first, Jamaica scored a massive total of 241/4 runs in their 20 overs. Chris Gayle scored a brilliant century and made 116 runs off 62 balls with seven fours and 10 sixes. He was supported well by Chadwick Walton, who made 73 runs off just 36 balls.
It was looking like an impossible task to try to chase this mammoth total. Not many gave a chance to St. Kitts, as they needed a good start for the chase. And that’s what happened during their chase. Both openers scored their respective half-centuries and made 88 runs in the first six overs. It was a complete carnage from Lewis, who scored a 17-ball fifty to give his team a rocking start. He made 53 off 18 balls, with three fours and six sixes. With the help of Devon Thomas (71). St. Kitts chased down the target with seven balls to spare to register the biggest chase in CPL history.
2. JP Duminy (15 balls) against Trinbago Knight Riders in 2019
Former South African skipper JP Duminy holds the record for the second fastest fifty in the history of the CPL. It came against Trinbago Knight Riders in the 2019 season, the same season in which Evin Lewis scored a 17-ball fifty. It was the 23rd match of the season between Trinbago and Barbados. After winning the toss, Barbados chose to bat first. They had a really good start and both openers added 110 runs in 13.5 overs.
Despite a good opening stand, the run rate was very slow. But then JP Duminy came to the crease after the first wicket. He just took the scoring rate to the sky. Duminy scored a 15-ball fifty and made 65 runs off 20 balls with four boundaries and seven sixes. Thus, Barbados reached a competitive total of 192/5 in 20 overs. In reply, Trinbago got all out for just 129 runs in 17.4 overs and lost the match by 63 runs.
1. Andre Russell (14 balls) against Saint Lucia Kings (Fastest in CPL)
When you hear the name Andre Russell, you immediately think of brute force. The all-rounder holds both the records for the fastest 50 and 100 in the CPL. The fastest half-century came in the 3rd game of the 2021 season between Jamaica Tallawahs and St. Lucia Kings at Basseterre. St. Lucia won the toss and chose to bowl first. But it didn’t go as per the plan. All the Jamaica batters came hard after the bowling.
Three batters placed a quick 45+ runs innings. But the staggering innings came from the bat of Russell, who came in the 18th over, when the score was 199. The all-rounder scored a 14-ball fifty to score 50 runs off 14 balls with three fours and six maximums. Jamaica made 55 runs in the last 16 balls and ended up at 255/5 in 20 overs. In reply, St. Lucia got all out for just 135 runs in 17.3 overs and lost the match by 120 runs.
