ODI: Playing cricket for your country at the highest level is the dream of every cricketer who starts playing the game. However, only a few of them are given the opportunity to represent their country at the international level. Then making an appearance and playing for a long time are both different. And here we will discuss some of the players who went on to have a big cricket career.
This list includes those players that have scored the most runs in ODI cricket. In particular, we will discuss the players with the fastest 13,000 career runs in one-day internationals. To note, there are only four players with over 13,000 career runs in ODIs. And those four are legends of the game.
4. Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka) – 416 innings
One of the best cricketers that Sri Lanka has ever produced and the batter that changed the way Sri Lanka plays. Sanath Jayasuriya was known for his unique style of playing aggressive cricket and also loved to dominate the opposition bowlers. The left-hander made his ODI debut in December 1989 against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. He played ODI cricket for 22 years for his country. In ODI cricket, Jayasuriya is the four-highest run-getter with 13430 runs in 433 innings. He completed 13,000 runs in 416 innings.
3. Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka) – 363 innings
Next on the list and the third fastest player is the former Sri Lankan skipper, Kumar Sangakkara. The wicket-keeper batsman is among the best the game has ever seen and also retired as the second highest run-scorer in ODI cricket. He made his ODI debut in July 2000 against Pakistan at Galle. He went on to play for 15 years for his country. In his career, he played 404 ODIs and scored 14234 at an average of 41.98, including 25 centuries and 93 half-centuries. He completed 13000 runs in 363 innings.
2. Ricky Ponting (Australia) – 341 innings
Former Australia World Cup-winning captain, who led his country to lift the 2003 and 2007 titles is next. Ricky Ponting is the third highest run-getter in ODI cricket ever and is the highest for his country. Ponting made his ODI debut in February 1995 against South Africa at Wellington. He represented Australia for 17 years and played 375 ODIs overall. Ponting made 13704 runs in 365 innings at an average of 42.03, with 30 centuries and 82 half-centuries. It took him 341 innings to reach 13,000 ODI runs.
1. Sachin Tendulkar (India) – 321 innings
If it is about scoring runs in the game of cricket, then who can come close to the Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar? The man with the most games, most runs and most centuries is at the top of the list. Sachin also has the longest career, which lasted until he was 23 years old. He made his ODI debut in December 1989 against Pakistan and played 463 ODIs and scored 18426 runs at an average of 44.83. Sachin also scored 49 centuries and 96 half-centuries. It took him 321 innings to reach the milestone of 13,000 ODI runs in his career.
