IPL Auction 2023: The TATA IPL 2022 saw some tough competition for the top four positions. With two new teams in the tournament, it became more competitive. However, the most unfortunate team that missed the chance to qualify for the playoffs in the 2022 season was the Delhi Capitals. DC finished the last season in fifth place. They needed to win their last game against the Mumbai Indians, but unfortunately, they lost it and also lost the chance to qualify for the playoffs.
But now, the franchise will look to do it even better in the 16th edition of the cash-rich league. For that, DC has started its preparations. The mini-auction is scheduled to take place on December 23 in Kochi. And the team has made some significant moves in terms of player retention and release. So let’s check DC’s retained and released players’ lists.
IPL Auction 2023: Retained players for DC
Delhi Capitals haven’t won an IPL title in the history of 15 seasons. The closest they came was finishing second in the 2020 season, losing in the final to the Mumbai Indians. If we leave out the 2022 season, DC has qualified for the playoffs in all three seasons prior to that. Thus, the franchise is eagerly waiting to win its first IPL title.
That is why they decided to keep the same group of players from the previous season. The veteran Australian duo of David Warner and Mitchell Marsh were retained. Rishabh Pant, Prithivi Shaw, Sarfaraz Khan, and Axar Patel were the obvious choices. However, they have retained their three overseas pacers, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, and Mustafizur Rahman.
Aside from that, the franchise has placed its faith in Rovman Powell, a hard-hitting West Indian all-rounder. The Indian trio of Chetan Sakariya, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, and Khaleel Ahmed has also been retained. The highest wicket-taker in DC last season was Kuldeep Yadav, so he was expected. The Indian U19 World Cup winning captain, Yash Dhull, didn’t get any game time but is also part of the team.
Retained players: Rishabh Pant (c), David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Prithvi Shaw, Ripal Patel, Rovman Powell, Sarfaraz Khan, Axar Patel, Anrich Nortje, Chetan Sakariya, Yash Dhull, Lalit Yadav, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Khaleel Ahmed, Kuldeep Yadav, Lungi Ngidi, Mustafizur Rahman, Aman Khan, Praveen Dubey, Vicky Ostwal
IPL Auction 2023: Released Players for DC
DC broke their bank by acquiring Shardul Thakur in the 2022 auction. In the end, they signed him for INR 10 crore. But this season, they made a big move and traded Thakur to the Kolkata Knight Riders. The Capitals traded for Aman Khan from KKR. Apart from the Indian pacer, the franchise also released Kiwi wicketkeeper Tim Seifert, who didn’t play in many games last season.
Veteran Indian batter Mandeep Singh was also retained by the franchise. The Capitals also released Indian wicketkeeper KS Bharat, which means that they are left with only Pant to do the wicket-keeping duties. Overall, they have only released those players who didn’t have much involvement in the 2022 season.
Released Players: Shardul Thakur (traded), Tim Seifert, Mandeep Singh, Srikar Bharat, Ashwin Hebbar
Remaining Purse Value for Delhi Capitals
Apart from releasing their most expensive player (Shardul Thakur), DC has added INR 10 crore to their bank. Now, they are left with a remaining purse value of INR 19.45 crore. The team is looking good, but the franchise would like to add a back-up wicketkeeper and an overseas all-rounder for the team.
