Delhi Capitals is one of the eight franchises that made their debut in the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League. DC made it to the semi-finals of the first two editions. 1. 2020 season Final vs Mumbai Indians – Runners-up
Delhi Capitals played their first and only final in the 2020 season. It was Shreyas Iyer who captained the side. DC ended the 2019 at third place after losing the playoffs. But in the next season, they performed brilliantly. DC had the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Shimron Hetmyer, Kagiso Rabada, and many more superstars.
DC started the 2020 season with a nail-biting tie against Punjab, which Delhi won in a superover. In the first nine group games, DC won seven matches and looked pretty good to end the group at the top. However, they had some struggles and lost four out of their last five games. As a result, they ended the group in second place with 16 points, only behind MI with 18 points.
Delhi faced Mumbai Indians in Qualifer 1. Mumbai scored a massive 200/5 in their 20 overs. Chasing the target, Delhi had a horrible start and lost their first three wickets for zero runs on the board. As a result, they only reached 143/8 in 20 overs and lost the game by 57 runs. In the Qualifier 2 they faced SRH. Delhi batted first and scored 189/3 in the first inning.
Shikhar Dhawan was the top scorer with 78 runs. In reply, SRH managed a score of 172/8 in their chase and lost the game by 17 runs. That win helped DC advance to their first ever IPL final. But for them, it was their toughest opponent in the final. Before the final, Delhi and Mumbai played three games in that season, and MI won all three.
Eventually, it happened again in the final. Batting first, DC had some struggles in the middle. They scored 156/7 in 20 overs. Chasing the target, MI skipper Rohit Sharma gave them a brilliant start with 51-ball 68 runs. In the end, they reached the targrt of 157/5 in 18.4 over to win. That loss ended DC’s 2020 campgain as runners-up.
