IPL 2023: Chennai Super Kings has been one of the most successful franchise in the leagues history around the world. CSK has won the IPL title four times, in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021, respectively. Apart from that, they have also won the Champions League T20 twice, in 2010 and 2014. That is because CSK always invests wisely in the players it buys. That’s what happened in the IPL 2023 auction.
Notably, the four-time IPL champions had their worst season in IPL 2022. They ended the season with only four wins out of 14 games and were in ninth place on the points table. Thus, in the 2023 auction, the franchises signed some of the multi-dimensional cricketers who will undoubtedly fill the gap in the team and propel the performance graph much higher. The team entered the auction with a remaining purse value of INR 20.45 crore. They had seven slots to fill, including two overseas.
IPL 2023: Chennai Super Kings singed Ben Stokes in the auction
CSK singed the biggest names in the auction. The franchises went all out for Sam Curran in the starting and entered the bidding war with Punjab Kings. Notably, Curran played for CSK in the 2021 season. However, they couldn’t acquire him eventually and it was Punjab that singed the English all-rounder. But the Yellow Army then went for the English test captain and superstar all-rounder Ben Stokes, and there were other 5–6 franchises that tried to grab Stokes. But in the end, CSK succeeded in signing the all-rounder for a whopping price of INR 16.25 crore.
Stokes has also become the costliest player purchased by CSK in the history of the IPL. That shows how much the franchise wanted to have him on the team. And, with the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, and Dwaine Pretorius already on his side, Stokes’ experience will undoubtedly be useful. CSK is now full of world-class all-rounders, which has made this team stronger.
Notably, Stokes and MS Dhoni have played together earlier as well, for the Rising Pune Supergiant in the IPL. And now they will be seen together. And the English test skipper can also be the next captain of the team. After Dwayne Bravo’s retirement from the IPL, Stokes will be an ideal replacement. Then, they also picked up veteran Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane, who did pretty well for KKR last season. Meanwhile, Robin Uthappa has announced his retirement, and Rahane will replace him in the team. Over the years, CSK has also invested in uncapped talent from India. That’s what they did and signed the likes of Shaik Rasheed, Nishant Sindhu, Ajay Mandal, and Bhagath Verma for the next season.
