CPL 2023: What is CPL Red Card, why and when it is used?
Slow overrate has been a major issue in limited-overs cricket. The ICC also introduced a rule of keeping one extra fielder in the circle for the bowling team in the death overs as a penalty when they failed to bowl the first 19 overs within the deadline. It had an effect on the game. To make it more interesting, the CPL 2023 comes up with a new “Red Card” rule to combat slow over-rates.
This rule will be used to punish the bowling team for taking too much time to bowl their overs. According to this rule, if the bowling team has not bowled their overs as per the given timeline and is behind by the start of the 20th over of the innings, then the fielding side will lose a player and they will have to field with 10 players on the ground.
The on-field umpires will give the team’s captain a red card, and one player will have to sit out. Apart from this, they will have to field six players within the circle. It will be the decision of the captain that who will leave the field.
How much time does a team have to bowl 19 overs?
A bowling team has a total of 85 minutes to complete an entire innings of 20 overs. By the 72nd minute and 15 seconds, the 17th over should be completed. For the 18th over, the time is 76 minutes and 30 seconds, and for the 19th over, it is 80 minutes and 45 seconds.
