The 9th edition of the ODI World Cup took place in West Indies in 2007. It had a total of 51 games, which took place between March 13 and April 28. A total of 16 teams took part in the tournament. Australia, which won the 1999 and 2003 ODI World Cups entered the event as the defending champions. Bermuda, Canada, Ireland, Scotland, Kenya, and Netherlands were the associate members to play in this competition.
16 teams were divided into four groups of four teams each. Australia made his way as they won the third consecutive ODI World Cup as they won the 2007 edition as well. Just like the 2003 World Cup, Australia stayed undefeated throughout the 2007 WC and won every game in the competition.
A Group: Australia, South Africa, Scotland, Netherlands
B Group: Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Bermuda
C Group: New Zealand, England, Kenya, Canada
D Group: Pakistan, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Ireland
Australia’s journey in 2007 ODI World Cup
Australia started the tournament with a group game against Scotland and won it easily by a margin of 203 runs. Ricky Ponting smashed 113 runs in that game. Then, they made it even better and registered a 229-run win against the Netherlands in the next game. Brad Hodge scored 123 runs. In their last group game against South Africa, the Men in Yellow won by 83 runs, with a century from Matthew Hayden (101). Australia topped their group and qualified for the Super 8.
In their first game of next round, Australia thrashed West Indies by 103 runs, with the help of Matthew Hayden (158 runs). Then, they registered a 10-wicket win over Bangladesh in a rain-hit game. In their next game against England, the Australian team registered a three-wicket win, chasing the target of 248. Australia then thrashed Ireland by nine wickets with 226 balls to spare. They dismissed Ireland for 91 and made 92/1 in 12.2 overs.
Australia beat Sri Lanka in their next game by seven wickets. Sri Lanka made 226 in 49.4 overs. Australia chased down the target in 42.4 overs and made 232/3. They played New Zealand in their last Super 8 game in Grenada. It was another one-sided affair for the Men in Yellow. Batting first, they scored a big total of 348 runs. Hayden (103) scored third century of the tournament. New Zealand got all out for 133, and Australia won by 215 runs. Australia met South Africa in the semi-final in St. Lucia. South Africa suffered badly and got all out for just 149 runs in 43.5 overs. Australia made 153/3 in 31.3 overs and won the game by seven wickets to move on to the final.

Australia Roadmap to 2007 World Cup Final
They faced Sri Lanka in the final, and it was another one-sided win for Australia. It was a rain-hit 38-over game. Batting first, Australia posted a big total of 281/4 in 38 overs. Adam Gilchrist made a 104-ball 149. In reply, Sri Lanka made 215/6 and lost by 53 runs (D/L method). With this win, Australia won their third consecutive title and fourth overall.
