It was built in 1974 after a dispute between the Cricket Club of India (owner of the Brabourne Stadium) & the Mumbai Cricket Association over allocation of tickets for cricket matches. Today, it is the main cricket stadium in the city & has a capacity of more than 33,000 people.
The Wankhede is home venue of the Mumbai cricket team for the Ranji Trophy as well as of the Mumbai Indians which plays in the IPL.
The first test match at the Wankhede was played in the year 1975 between India & West Indies. The first ODI was played 12 years later in 1987 between India & Sri Lanka. Over time it has emerged as one of the main stadiums in India. The final of the 2011 Cricket World Cup was held on this ground which Indian went on to win.
