The ground was established in 1995 which makes it one of the newer cricket grounds in England. With a capacity of 19,000, the Riverside Ground is home to the Durham County Cricket team.

The ground is used for both first-class as well as international matches. Since the ground has test status from the ICC, it can be used for hosting all types of cricket matches. The first test match on this ground was played England & Zimbabwe in 2003. Pakistan & Scotland played the first ODI on this ground in 1999. The sole T20 match that has been played so far on this ground took place in 2008 between England & South Africa.
