Dhawan still not certain for World Cup

Shikhar Dhawan fans would be relieved that the Delhite finally got a three figure score under his belt in the one-dayers. In the last almost one year, he had not got any hundred and the pressure was slowly building on him with other openers scoring consistently in domestic cricket. The likes of Robin Uthappa and Manish Pandey had made serious cases for themselves with their batting in the Champions League T20. Pandey had played well in the tour game against Sri Lanka as well. Also, Rohit Sharma is fit now. So, Dhawan had to score somehow, otherwise, his world cup dream would be in danger.

However, it still can’t be said that this hundred has secured Dhawan’s place for the World Cup. He will have to score a couple of more good scores. There are 4 matches to go against Sri Lanka and then, there is a triangular in Australia. The selectors would probably be resting Rahane, who surely will be one of the openers in the world cup after his performances against England and also, against West Indies, at some point of time during this series against Sri Lanka and would try out Pandey and Rohit and if those two play some good knocks and Dhawan fails, his position will again get shaky. So, he will have to be quite awake. He must not get complacent thinking that he is going to the World Cup now no matter what.

However, if Dhawan’s numbers in the last two years are seen collectively, one would say he deserves to go to the World Cup. But, those numbers are a bit misleading. Actually, Dhawan scored most of his runs and his hundreds in his first proper season. In the second season, he has been a complete failure. Just one hundred and a 90 plus score he has made and the world cup will be overseas where Dhawan’s record is very poor. So, his case is not the strongest amongst the openers at this point of time.
